Unit 4: Procurement and Management Support

Learning Activities

The following tasks are required of you for this section:

  1. Study the Seminar notes for this section. Do the exercise, and follow up with the additional readings until you feel you are ready to meet the learning outcomes for this section.
  2. Answer the study questions in your own notes. You can also post comments or queries on the study questions in the General Discussion Forum. Be sure to stay subscribed to this forum so that you do not miss posts from other learners.
  3. Submit an answer to one of the discussion questions in the Section 4.3 Discussion as well as the three additional course feedback questions.
Note: The forum is set up so that you have to submit your answer to a discussion question before you can read the answers provided by your fellow learners:
    1. Question: What activities of your organization (or an organization of your choice) produce Scope 1, 2, or 3 greenhouse gas emission sources, as defined in the National Carbon Offset Standard Carbon Neutral Program Guidelines (maximum three paragraphs)?

    2. Question: The five principles in the Greenhouse Gas Protocol for calculating a carbon footprint are relevance, completeness, consistency, transparency, and accuracy. How would you suggest using ICT to convince an independent auditor that your organization has complied with these principles (maximum three paragraphs)?

    3. Question: Three researchers from NTT have claimed CO2e emissions reductions of 46 per cent from the use of broadband (wired) and 79 per cent from the use of wireless, per subscriber per year. They include savings from the use of email in place of paper mail and music downloads instead of buying CDs from a store. How would you use the  National Carbon Offset Standard to show that these actions actually reduced emissions (maximum three paragraphs)?

To wrap up, everyone should answer the questions below (thanks!):

    • In your opinion, what are the most significant green ICT strategies that you learned in this course? Choose up to three, and write one paragraph on each.
    • In what concrete way(s) will you apply what you have learned in this course?
    • What concluding remarks (if any) would you like to share with your  classmates before you sign off on this course?
  4. Post a response to the postings of at least one of your fellow learners.
  5. Add or edit at least one entry in the Student-created Glossary.
  6. Complete the self-test, which has randomized questions, as many times as you wish. You will get a slightly different set of questions each time.
