Unit 1: Politics, Science, and Business of Sustainability

Learning Activities

The following tasks are required of you for this section:

  1. Before you do anything else, please introduce yourself to your fellow students and instructor in the General Discussion Forum. You do not need to go into great detail; just write a few lines that tell others a little about yourself and your interest in green computing. Suggest at least three outcomes you want and expect from this course.
  2. Study the Seminar notes for this section, and follow up with the additional readings until you feel you are ready to meet the learning outcomes for this section.
  3. Answer the study questions in your own notes. You can also post comments or queries on the study questions in the General Discussion Forum. Be sure to stay subscribed to this forum so that you do not miss posts from other learners.
  4. Submit an answer to one of the discussion questions in the Section 1.1 Discussion.
Note: The forum is set up so that you have to submit your answer to a discussion question before you can read the answers provided by your fellow learners:
    1. Question: In up to three paragraphs, describe the factors that affect climate change and how responses to climate change may affect the organization in which you work (or one of your choice). Use the following as a guide:

      • What industry is the organization involved in?
      • What are its principal lines of goods or services? Do these contribute to greenhouse gas production?
      • Are there processes in place to reduce greenhouse gas production? If not, can you suggest some?
    2. Question: In up to three paragraphs, explain the concept of environmental sustainability as it relates to IT products and processes. Discuss how sustainability is addressed in the organization in which you work (or one of your choice). Use the following as a guide:

      • What industry is the organization involved in?
      • What are its principal lines of goods or services? In what ways could they threaten the sustainability of Earth’s resources and/or human health?
      • Is there any plan in place to build sustainability into production and/or delivery of products? If not, can you suggest some?
  5. Post a response to the postings of at least one of your fellow learners.
  6. Add or edit at least one entry in the Student-created Glossary.
  7. Complete the self-test, which has randomized questions, as many times as you wish. You will get a slightly different set of questions each time.
