Green Information and Communications Technology Strategies

Unit 1: Politics, Science, and Business of Sustainability

Course Outline

The course consists of four major topics. Each has three sub-topics (in a typical schedule, one sub-topic per week, with two weeks at the end of the course reserved for review and writing the exam).

Unit 1: Politics, Science, and Business of Sustainability

Section 1.1: Introduction to Green ICT Strategies

Objectives: Grasp the environmental, social, and business context for sustainability, and overview the background and boundaries, including the principles of environmental sustainability and the science of climate change.

Section 1.2: The Global ICT Footprint

Objectives: Estimate the embodied carbon and the footprint from use of telecommunications, data centres, and desktop PCs.

Section 1.3: Enabling ICT

Objectives: Investigate how ICT systems can reduce energy and materials use by dematerialization (replacing the movement of goods with information to improve the efficiency of business systems), and by improving the efficiency of machines (smart motor systems), logistics, buildings, and grids.

Unit 2: Technical Strategy and Planning

Section 2.1: Energy Saving

Objective: Look at how data centres and client equipment can be made more energy efficient.

Section 2.2: Materials Use

Objective: Explore how the Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool (EPEATTM) deals with use of materials, including hazardous substances.

Section 2.3: Methods and Tools

Objective: Investigate the appropriate methods and tools for the planning, development, operation, management, and maintenance of systems for an organization.

Unit 3: Business/IS Strategy and Planning

Section 3.1: Business Process Improvement

Objectives: Analyze business processes to identify alternative solutions that reduce environmental impact; assess feasibility; and recommend new approaches.

Section 3.2: Improving Energy Efficiency

Objective: Investigate how to implement and assess data centre efficiency.

Section 3.3: Enterprise Architecture

Objectives: Incorporate green ICT into the models and plans that drive a business strategy forward; find opportunities to both improve business performance and benefit the environment.

Unit 4: Procurement and Management Support

Section 4.1: Procurement

Objective: Write ICT requirement documents to ensure that hardware, software, and service suppliers provide green products.

Section 4.2: Energy Star Program and Quality Management

Objective: Investigate the fit between green ICT requirements and those of quality management systems.

Section 4.3: Compliance Audit

Objective: Assess the conformity of systems to environmental standards, such as the ISO 14000 series of environment management standards, EPEATTM, and Energy Star programs.
